Equilibrium shapes and stability of rotating drops

Abstract:Direct variational methods are used to obtain nonaxisymmetric equilibrium shapes of a rotating drop. The results are given of experiments on the interaction of freely floating drops of viscous fluid. It is shown that if the dimensionless angular momentum of the system is OHgr > 3.4, then a sequence of three-dimensional shapes similar to ellipsoids bifurcates from the sequence of axisymmetric shapes The stability of these shapes is studied in Poincaré's scheme.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 13–20, July–August, 1982.
