| Abstract: | An accurate approximation is derived for solitary wave motion in a one-dimensional oscillator chain. Analysis shows that waves exist, travelling faster than sound, whenever the repulsive wall of the potential is anharmonic. The waves carry considerable momentum and potential energy but relatively little kinetic energy. |
