Shell-correction approach to state densities of nuclei |

| Abstract: | A consistent renormalization of ground state energy and state density as a function of deformation is presented. Renormalized state densities do not increase uniformly with deformation. Consequences for the fissionability of excited nuclei are pointed out. |
