Observation of undulations of layers in the smectic B and H phases of a liquid crystal

We have observed scattering of light by static undulations, and by the undulation instability of the layers, in the B and H smectic phases. This would indicate that the B and H phases are closer to a liquid crystal than to a “plastic crystal”.
