Polaronic effects on interconfigurational fluctuation lifetimes in intermediate valence systems

It is shown that in systems exhibiting intermediate valence polaronic effects can lead to significant reductions in interconfiguration fluctuation frequency and to a shift in the electronic excitation spectrum. Numerical estimates for SmS give a shift in good accord with recent experiments and indicate a non-negligible lifetime enhancement factor.
