Alkyl substitution in a series of main chain, liquid crystal polyesters strongly depressed their glass temperatures, melting points, clearing points, and mesophase thermal stabilities. Polymers with pendant n-alkyl substituents eight carbon atoms or longer did not form a liquid crystal phase.
