Carotenoid synthesis by way of sulfones: synthesis of beta-carotene]

Sulfones, prepared from conjugated arylsulfonyl ylids and allylic halides, eliminate corresponding aryl sulfinates with formation of conjugated polyenes. Using this method β-carotene ( 8 ) has been synthesized.
