| Abstract: | The restoration of chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics as the temperatureT and the chemical potential |μ| are increased is discussed qualitatively and using effective field theories. The latter are shown not to give reliable quantitative estimates. It is argued that a dilute gas of instantons cannot be the main dynamical agent responsible for the breakdown of chiral symmetry. |
