| Abstract: | A new method is introduced to calculate particle-hole state densities taking into account the complete structure in both the proton and neutron shells. The results are given for three nuclei: 208Pb, 172Yb and 117Sn. They are compared with previous formulae and with two other expressions derived in the present paper. Strong shell effects are displayed and discussed. |
