Polarographic oxidation of iodide, bromide and chloride and the influence of cadmium(II)-perchlorate on the oxidation of iodide in different solvents The polarographic behaviour of tetraethylammonium iodide, bromide and chloride has been investigated at the rotating platinum electrode in dimethylsulfoxide, dimethylformamide, propandiol-1.2-carbonate, acetonitrile, benzonitrile and nitrobenzene. In these solvents the influence of cadmium(II)-perchlorate on the polarographic oxidation of iodide has been studied. The half-wave potentials at 25°C in 0,1M solutions of tetraethylammonium perchlorate are referred to the bisbiphenylchromium(I)-scale. The electro-oxidation to elementary halogene proceeds in the case of iodide and bromide in two steps, in the case of chloride in one step. The I3–/I2-step half-wave potentials are related to solvent donicities, as well as the I–/I3–-step in solvents of similarEPA-strength towards iodide. The influence of cadmium(II) on the oxidation of iodide increases with decreasing solvent donicity.
