Abstract:To examine whether dietary zinc supplementation could improve liver regeneration,40 adult C57 BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups: control,zinc supplementation,ethanol poisoning and zinc supplementation plus ethanol poisoning.Two groups(ethanol poisoning and zinc supplementation plus ethanol poisoning) were fed an ethanol-containing liquid diet for 6 months developed alcoholic liver disease.Liver regeneration was assessed by immunohistochemical staining of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA),and as to assess the status of oxidative stress of the mice,the content of MDA and SOD was detected.The results showed that compared with the ethanol poisoning group,the number of proliferation cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)-positive hepatocytes in zinc supplementation plus ethanol poisoning increased significantly.And compared with the control group,the content of MDA increased significantly in the ethanol group,while the content of SOD declined signicantly(P<0.05).In the contrast,the content of SOD increased in the zinc plus ethanol group and MDA decreased significantly compared with the ethanol group(P<0.05).It conclud long term ethanol exposure can lead to high level of peroxide and antioxidation activity fall off,whlie zinc supplementation can reverse the un-balance status.Zinc-enhanced liver regeneration suggesting that dietary zinc supplementation may have beneficial effects in alcoholic liver disease.
