Surface plasmons at the surface of liquid mercury

Abstract:We have evaluated the surface plasmon dispersion relation in the presence of the inhomogeneous surface zone which has been proposed for liquid mercury. Assuming that photon-plasmon coupling occurs through the mechanism of frustrated total reflection, we find the dispersion relation to be sensitive to the existence of such a zone, providing retardation effects are taken into account. The results, it is believed, define nonradiative surface plasmon absorption as a useful technique for the study of conducting surfaces.
