Polyhalogenated monoterpenes from plocamium cartilagineum from the british coast

Plocamium cartilagineum collected at several locations along the British coast contained polyhalogenated monocyclic monoterpenes, five of which have been fully characterised. The halogenated monoterpenes from the British samples are closely related to those previously found in P. violaceum. The linear polyhalogenated monoterpenes which are characteristic of P. cartilagineum collected in La Jolla were found in one sample of P. cartilagineum from Britain. The structures of the five new monocyclic monoterpenes were determined by comparison of the spectral data with those of known compounds and by chemical interconversion.
