Abstract:Excessive emission of sulfur dioxide(SO2) poses a serious threat to the natural environment, making the capture and utilization of SO2widely concerned in industrial production. Currently, technologies of capturing SO2have been relatively mature, and the value-added utilization of the captured SO2has become a hot-point issue. Among various SO2utilization technologies, chemical utilization is considered to be one of the most promising methods for realizing value-addition of SO2because of the advantages of excellent atomic economy and low energy consumption. In this paper, the oxidation and reduction of SO2and organic synthesis using SO2in inorganic and organic reactions are reviewed. The reaction mechanism and reaction conditions of conversion of SO2, and the influence of different catalysts on the reactions are introduced. The challenges of severe reaction conditions and high dependence on catalysts in chemical utilization of SO2are pointed out. The further research directions of chemical utilization of SO2are prospected.
