| Abstract: | We prove that in linear periodic gravity water waves there are no closed orbits for the water particles in the fluid. Each particle experiences per period a backward-forward motion that leads overall to a forward drift. This paper was written while both authors participated in the program “Wave Motion” at the Mittag-Leffler Institute, Stockholm, in the Fall of 2005. |
