Abstract: | The third harmonic (355 nm) of a pulsed, Nd-YAG laser has been used to induce pyrene fluorescence in cyclohexane solution. The rate constants of fluorescence quenching of pyrene by alkyl and aryl bromides have been measured. The increase of kq with increasing the electron affinity of the quencher is attributed to CT interactions between the fluorophore and the heavy atom quencher involving a CT encounter complex, in which the quencher acts as an electron acceptor. |
