| Abstract: | Neutral-carrier-based ion-selective electrodes for the assay of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations have advanced to become the most frequently used potentiometric sensors in clinical chemistry. The major developments since the realization of the first potentiometric cell assemblies utilizing electrically neutral complexing agents (valinomycin and the macrotetrolides) in 1966 are presented. |
