Abstract: | Bromoacenaphthylenes were synthesized and polymerized by ionic and free-radical initiation. 5-Bromoacenaphthylene was found to yield high molecular weight polymers (104 < M < 106). Kinetic studies on the photodegradation of poly-5-bromoacenaphthylene in solution were carried out at various temperatures in tetrahydrofuran and dioxane as solvent. The polymers were found to undergo random chain scission. The photodegradation is solvent- and temperature-dependent and leads to a lower limiting value. As for polyacenaphthylene, some weak links were detected in the polymers. |
