Abstract: | The problem of Miele of finding the transversal contour of a conical body of given length and base area so as to minimize the total drag in hypersonic flow is solved here without making use of the usual tools of the calculus of variations. The solution makes use of the isoperimetric inequality, together with the usual elementary methods for determining the minimum of a function of one real variable. |
