| Abstract: | Polarized mid-infrared spectra of single crystals as well as those of a highly oriented polycrystalline film of α-chloroacetic acid have been obtained. The fundamental frequencies have been assigned based on these spectra, the Raman spectrum of the solid acid and the infrared spectrum of α-chloroacetic acid-d1 and assuming an oriented gas model of the crystal. The data are most consistent with a hydrogen bonded polymeric structure for α-chloroacetic acid. |
