Some climatic studies on the regime of the river Mahanadi basin

Summary An attempt has been made in the present paper to study some of the climatic aspects of the moisture as well as thermal regimes of the river Mahanadi basin. This type of study finds its importance in finding out, not only the water potentialities of a river, but also the thermic conditions that favour the growth and development of vegetation at and around the basin. The basic elements required for the present study have been obtained through the water balance procedure developed by Thornthwaite. The computed run-off values are well agreeing with the measured ones.

Riassunto In questo lavoro si è fatto un tentativo di studiare alcuni degli aspetti climatici dellumidità e dei regimi termici del bacino del fiume Mahanadi. L'importanza di questo tipo di studio consiste nel ricavare non solo le potenzialità in acqua di un fiume, ma anche le condizioni termiche che favoriscono la crescita e lo sviluppo di vegetazione sopra e intorno al bacino. Gli elementi di base richiesti per questo studio sono stati ottenuti attraverso la procedura di bilancio dell'acqua messa a punto da Thornthwaite. I valori di fuoriuscita calcolati sono in buon accordo con quelli misurati.
