Vibrational relaxation by collision in polyatomic molecules

A model of a harmonic oscillator with friction is used to discuss the conversion of translational energy to vibrational by collision of an atom with a polyatomic molecule. It is shown that adiabatic conversion implies that E ² may substantially exceed the value calculated, neglecting the interaction of the bond with the rest of the molecule.
