Abstract:5-Substituted pyrimidines in which the substituent is electron-donating or weakly electron-withdrawing, form normal cations in aqueous acidic solutions. Those in which the substituent is strongly electron-withdrawing form 3,4-hydrated cations, which are usually rather prone to undergo ring cleavage reactions.1H NMR, 13C NMR and u.v. spectroscopy are used in the study.
