Abstract: | Black holes can have non-classical hair, i.e. they can be characterized by observable quantum numbers associated with discrete charges which are not coupled to long range propagating gauge fields. This blurs the apparent distinction between small black holes and elementary particles, as well has having important implications for wormhole physics. This essay received the fourth award from the Gravity Research Foundation for the year 1989—Ed.Also Visiting Scientist, Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
