Abstract: | Summary The combination of data gathered from levelling and concurrent gravity observations offers an important way of verifying the
hypothesis of the anelastic crustal instability during the dilatancy processes occurring before an earthquake. The relations
between the observed gravity variation, elevation change, density variation of the dilatant volume and volumetric strain,
in the case of a sphere and an infinite cylinder, are given.
