Abstract:Previous work has shown that electrons donated by the graphite to the FeCl3 intercalant freeze onto some Fe3+ ions to change them into Fe2+ ions at low temperatures. We show that the created Fe2+ ions are not randomly situated. Indirect evidence suggesting the formation of a specific chemical superlattice of Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions is presented. A method for direct observation of this superlattice is suggested.
