| Abstract: | Sodium cleaves elemental tellurium, TeX, quantitatively to Te2– 2 and Te2- in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran in the presence of catalytic amounts of naphthalene. Subsequent addition of alkylating agent affords dialkyl tellurides and dialkyl ditellurides in excellent yields. |
