Abstract: | The Formation of Intermetallic Compounds between Platinum and Lanthanides (Ln) in the Presence of Iodine (Ln=Gd, Sm) . Reactions at 800°C in the system Pt/Gd/I produce the intermetallic compounds GdPt5, GdPt3 (AuCu3-type), and GdPt2 (MgCu2-type) depending on the ratio Gd:Pt and the iodine quantity. Using thermodynamic data the equilibrium conditions for the existence of the phases are evaluated and the experimental results interpreted. Using the same conditions in the case of the system Pt/Sm/I exclusively SmPt5 is produced. The results are explained on the basis of the expected difference in the heats of formation of GdI2 and SmI2. |
