All-optical fibre devices using polarization ellipse rotation

In optical fibres with very low birefringence, non-linear polarization coupling occurs because of the well-known ellipse rotation induced by the Kerr effect. This may be of use of future all-optical signal-processing circuitry. In particular we propose that the self-induced polarization ellipse rotation be used for a new optical transistor and for optical switches.
