Ablation of polyethylene terephthalate at 266 nm

Abstract:Microstructures of micrometer sizes are produced on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate using nanosecond Nd:YAG-laser irradiation at 266 nm wavelength. The stable and well-defined structures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. A theoretical model is suggested for the nonlinear behavior of etch depth versus incident laser fluence. In this model, two-photon stepwise absorption of chromophores is the dominant mechanism. Received: 3 August 2000 / Accepted: 9 January 2001 / Published online: 25 July 2001
