Abstract: | Abstract The problem of maximizing the buckling load of a plastic column of given volume, length, and material is studied. The governing equations are derived by means of the calculus of variations, and a parametric constraint on the maximum permissible stress is included in the analysis. The general problem is solved numerically, and the results obtained for some special cases, e.g., elastic columns, are shown to be in agreement with those found by previous investigators. |
