An experimental study of the energetics of fragmentation of H3

Abstract:Spatial beam profile measurements indicate that transient H3 molecules, formed in electron capture collisions of 3–4 keV H+3 ions with Mg atoms, fragment to H atoms and H2 molecules with up to five vibrational quanta. The experimental H3 fragmentation energy (?2.2 ± 0.1 eV) is in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
