Constraints on the high momentum behavior of inelastic scattering amplitudes

The ground state contributions to the leading high momentum behavior of the breakup amplitude of a composite system by a weak probe are shown to be exactly cancelled by final state interactions. The cancellation is a manifestation of the orthogonality of the target and continuum final states. The remaining large momentum behavior falls more rapidly and is more difficult to interpret directly in terms of properties of the target.
