His research interests are in mathematics education, particularly students' development and understanding of concepts in applied mathematics and the use of new technology in mathematics teaching. He gained his PhD at Plymouth, having completed his first degree at Imperial College and spent a number of years teaching in secondary schools and at a prison. He is currently extensively involved in research into the use of the CBL technology to improve student understanding of kinematics.
Jenny Sharp is a lecturer at the University of Plymouth and has worked in the Centre for Teaching Mathematics since 1995. She completed her first degree at Plymouth in 1991 and her PhD in 1997. Since joining the Centre she has had a key role in the Teachers Teaching with Technology Project, which provides in-service courses for teachers on the use of hand held technology in teaching mathematics. Her research interests are in the use of graphics calculators and particularly the ways that these can be used in conjunction with the CBL. She also coordinates the Mathematics Enrichment Programme, which provides extra-curricular activities for mathematics students, of all ages, in the South West
