Abstract: | A new model is proposed to explain the anomalous dynamic light scattering observed at the growing crystal-melt interface. With a small initial concentration of dissolved gas in the melt, the concentration at the interface can be driven above saturation by the rejection of solute by the advancing solidification front. Microbubbles of gas can then form near the interface. Because of surface tension, for fixed supersaturation there is a unique bubble size that can exist in equilibrium with the fluid. |
