Abstract:This article relates curcumin incorporation into poly(latic acid) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) fibers by electrospinning. The fibers were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, performed in attenuated total reflection, and the actual curcumin content was evaluated by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The poly(latic acid)/curcumin fibers were malleable, had rough surface, and an average diameter of 3.6 µm. On the other hand, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/curcumin fibers were rigid and porous and had an average diameter of 123.6 nm. The bigger diameter of the poly(latic acid) fibers was responsible for a higher percentage of curcumin/milligram of fiber.
