Abstract: | The properties of the natural vibrations of a hummock ridge in an elastic ice sheet are investigated. Typical shapes of the dispersion curves for symmetric and antisymmetric boundary waves which propagate along the hummock and damp exponentially with distance from the latter are obtained. It is shown that natural vibrations can initiate failure of the ice sheet at a certain distance from the hummock. Under compression this process leads to the formation of a parallel hummock ridge.Moscow.
