A Novel Polymer-Supported Scandium Catalyst Which Shows High Activity in Water

Abstract:Lewis acids in water on a polymer support (1) have been used, for the first time, as a catalyst. The organic solvent-free catalytic activity, first tested with allylation reactions with tetraallyltin, extended to other Lewis acid catalyzed reactions with a range of carbonyl compounds to afford the corresponding alcohol; reactions of aromatic, aliphatic, heterocyclic aldehydes and even ketones proceeded smoothly. Catalyst recovery was quantitative after simple filtration.
