Abstract: | The simulation by an analogue computer of slow reactions used for the purpose of chemical analysis is described. Bromination of maleic and fumaric acids is used for illustration. The concentration of bromine is traced spectrophotometrically as a function of time and the trace simulated with an analogue computer by the trial and error method. The initial concentration of the substance in question and the rate constant of the reaction are determined from the values given to the computer variables to obtain the best fit. Only a single experiment is required for the analysis. The procedure can be followed easily without laborious mathematical or graphical treatment. |
