| 摘 要： | Based on field investigation, theoretical analysis and model testing, the authors believe that the horizontal tensile stress caused by gravity at the top and bottom of big voids or holes is the primary rea-. son for the generation of vertical joints in loess. This paper explains the generation mechanism of vertical joints in loess from the viewpoint of mechanics for the first time.
