We have constructed a fluorescent nanosensor for dopamine (DA) and glutathione in physiologically relevant concentrations. QDs were coated with silica, and dopamine-quinone (formed by oxidation of DA) is captured on the surface of silica via dual interactions and quenches the photoluminescence of the modified QDs by an electron transfer process. Glutathione, in being a strong reducing agent, can chemically reduce the dopamine-quinone on the QDs, and this results in recovered photoluminescence. The method was applied to the determination of dopamine and glutathione in human serum sample with satisfactory results
