Abstract: | The mesophase behaviour of lanthanum(III) tetradecanoate, La(C13H27COO)3, (lanthanum myristate) has been studied by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and high temperature X-ray diffraction. This metallomesogen forms an ordered lamellar solid which melts to a smectic A mesophase (SmA). Structural details of the different phases are discussed. The higher homologues of the lanthanum(III) soaps were found to have a similar mesophase behaviour. |
