Thinking about 3G billing:don't wait for 3G

The author thinks about 3G as enabling mobile multimedia - but mobile multimedia is not waiting for 3G to come along. Mobile operators around the world are already launching mobile content services on so-called 2.5G networks, and are already dealing with the new challenges presented by content billing. By the time they launch 3G services, these operators will already be running the billing systems necessary to support them. In this article, we identify what challenges the billing system presents for the development of content services in mobile networks, and how the situation will develop in the medium term. We look in particular at the experiences of some of the European operators: what issues they are facing, and how they are dealing with them.
