Abstract:Ultraviolet spectra of mixtures of monomeric units of nucleic acids and dinucleoside monophosphates, containing the complementary nucleobases adenine and uracil, have been obtained in aqueous solution. Hypochromicity of spectra of the mixtures with respect to free components has been determined, introducing the correction corresponding to selfassociation of these compounds. Hypochromicity of mixtures can be considered an experimental evidence of the existence of heteroassociation processes.Infrared spectra of some complementary constituents of nucleic acids in aqueous solution also reveal hypochromic effects, which provide information about the molecular groups involved in the heteroassociation.
