On the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition on a restricted substrate area

Solitons on a restricted substrate area are shown to interact via long-range forces. This interaction increases the energy of the soliton superstructure and makes a symmetric superstructure preferable under certain conditions. Thus the experimentally observed symmetric superstructure near the phase transition can be explained.
