Nucleotide Platination Induced by Visible Light

A two-step photoreaction is induced by irradiation of the Pt^IV complex trans,cis-[Pt(OCOCH₃)₂I₂(en)] with visible light in the presence of guanosine 5′-monophosphate (5′-GMP; see scheme): A photoinduced ligand exchange followed by photoreduction gives the bis-GMP adduct of [Pt(en)]²⁺. Although the dihydroxodiiodo complex also undergoes a photoinduced ligand exchange, no reaction with the nucleotide was observed.
