Numerical investigation of the influence of gravitational convection on processes of heterogenous ignition

Abstract:A numerical method is used to investigate the influence of free convective motion of a gas on the process of heterogenous ignition. The dependence of the critical condition for ignition on the intensity of convection is obtained. The flow structure for different parameters and the features of the ignition process are investigated. It is noted that the ignition begins at a point and there is subsequent transition of the complete surface of the catalyst to the high-temperature region by a combustion wave that travels along the catalyst.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 144–149, January–February, 1980.
