Computer calculation of multicomponent phase equilibria

Abstract:The application of computer calculation techniques to the determination of phase equilibria in multicomponent systems is described. Examples of the use of such calculations in alloy development work and in metallurgical production processes are given. The importance of thermodynamic data banks for facilitating complex equilibrium calculations is demonstrated and the likely implications for future industrial operations are briefly discussed. It is concluded that the combination of computer calculation techniques with a much more restricted number of experimental measurements will in future lead to rapid and reliable determination of phase equilibria in multicomponent systems.
