| Abstract: | The absolute configuration of the moenuronic acid moiety of the antibiotic moenomycin A has been established by a partial synthesis starting from D-galactose. The relation between the absolute conformation of α-hydroxy lactones and their chiroptical properties is discussed in detail. |
