Abstract:The effective indices of guided modes in proton-exchanged LiNbO3 waveguides have been measured by means of TE-TM mode conversion. The mode conversion can tuke place in the process of acoustooptic coupling or even without the acoustic wave. This technique has obvious advantages over the standard prism method. The profiles of the extraordinary reftactive index, in the depth direction and in the lateral direction as well, have also been calculated based on the theory of multilayer waveguide.
